How AI Tools Really Speed Up Development — From My Experience

I’ve been building software for years, and I’ve seen plenty of “game-changing” tools come and go. But I’ll admit it — the new wave of AI development tools like Amazon Q, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and GitHub Copilot genuinely changed the way I work.

When used properly, they can cut development time in half or even more. But there’s a big if here: they only work this well when you know exactly what you’re doing.

Where AI Actually Helps

In my day-to-day work, AI shines in a few key areas:

• Writing unit tests so I can focus on the actual features.

• Checking my logic — I’ll have it walk through a function and verify my thinking.

• Challenging my architecture decisions with quick pros and cons lists.

• Saving time on research — I can get answers faster than scrolling through 20 Stack Overflow threads.

These may sound small, but multiplied over a project, they make a huge difference.

The Catch No One Tells You About

If you’re not already a skilled developer, AI will probably frustrate you more than it helps.

Why?

• You won’t always know when it’s hallucinating or making stuff up.

• The same function generated twice might have subtle differences — missing a line here or there — and those small changes can cause big problems.

• Without the experience to debug quickly, you’ll spend more time fixing AI’s work than coding yourself.

That’s why I don’t believe AI will replace programmers. Instead, it will reward the good ones and leave the rest behind.

The Problem With “Fully AI-Coded” Apps

I’ve seen companies pitch “100% AI-built apps” as if it’s a magic shortcut. In reality, they often break easily and are painful to maintain.
